Brown Center for the Study of Children at Risk Names New Director

Our Mission

To ensure that all children begin life with the promise of healthy neurobehavioral development.

Since its founding in 2005, the Brown Center has been committed to identifying exposures and other conditions that place children at risk for adverse neurodevelopmental and behavioral sequelae alongside characteristics of individuals and families that promote positive outcomes. Understanding earliest indicators of neurobehavioral risk and developing methods for assessing these are key activities of the Brown Center. A core mission of the Center for Children and Families, the Center's clinical arm, is to deliver behavioral health services and neurobehavioral evaluation grounded in the best scientific evidence for children from birth to age 5. Together, we strive to bi-directionally communicate research findings and clinical insights to generate innovative research ideas and improve clinical care.

Our Vision

To be a national leader in cutting-edge, clinically informed neurodevelopmental research and provider of evidence-based behavioral healthcare for children from birth to 5 years of age.

Faculty

Our group is interdisciplinary spanning the disciplines of developmental and clinical psychology, pediatrics, psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, social work, substance abuse and public health.

Research

The focus of our research at the Center is on the biological embedding of developmental processes in children at risk and how these processes are modified by environmental factors.

Newborn Assessment (NNNS-II)

The NeoNatal Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS-II) examines the neurobehavioral organization, neurological reflexes, motor development - active and passive tone, and signs of stress and withdrawal of the at-risk and drug-exposed infant.
